Recycling Is Now MANDATORY From 1 July!
IN BRIEF: Recycling becomes mandatory from 1 July; collection will be on the SAME DAY as your normal waste collection (but will be collected by a separate truck): leave your recycling in clear plastic bags next to your council bins; and orange “Ronnie” bags are no longer needed.
COMPULSORY RECYCLING WILL BE ROLLED OUT ACROSS JOBURG HOUSEHOLDS FROM MONDAY 1 JULY 2018.
This means that you will need to separate your regular waste before it is collected – in other words, items that can be recycled vs waste that cannot be recycled.
Pikitup employs people to sort it by hand, so you don’t need to separate paper/ plastic/ glass items. Simply put all your plastic/ paper/ glass/ cardboard/ small electrical items in clear plastic bags next to your council bins on the day of collection.
While no penalties have been put in place as of yet, residents are urged to be responsible, educate family members and domestic staff, and take the time to make this a viable concern going forwards.
HERE’S HOW TO MAKE THIS MANDATORY RECYCLING AN ABSOLUTE BREEZE:
- Have TWO bins inside your house – one for wet/ food waste and one for dry waste (recycling). If you’re not sure if something can be recycled, put it in anyway.
- Put out your normal council bin as usual. Put all your recycling in the clear plastic bags provided on the pavement next to your regular bin. If you run out, any clear plastic bags will do.
- Put all your plastic/ paper/ glass/ cardboard/ small electrical items in clear plastic bags next to your council bins on the day of collection.
- Educate family members and domestic staff about the new process.Make it work!
