Mandatory Recycling Begins SUNDAY – Here’s How To Do It!

Be First!

We have to admit being delighted that mandatory recycling has been introduced in Joburg – it makes so much sense for each household to separate their waste (“at source”, to use the correct term). We have had many questions about exactly how to go about it, where to buy the necessary bins, what to put in each bin, when to put the bins out – hence our quick guide with everything you need to know!

DID WE MISS ANYTHING? Leave any questions below and we’ll make sure they are answered!

1. HOW MANY BINS DO WE NEED?

You need just TWO bins:

  • one for your regular waste
  • one for ALL other recycling items

We suggest setting up these two bins in your kitchen and getting the whole family into a new routine from Day 1. It’s NOT hard and takes a matter of seconds to choose which bin to place the items – it will become second nature in a matter of days! Fold and flatten cardboard boxes as you go to save space.

2. SO THERE IS NO NEED TO SEPARATE GLASS, PAPER AND PLASTIC?

Absolutely not. You will place ALL recyclables – plastic, cans, paper, bottles and cardboard boxes – in one clear plastic bag, rinsed where necessary, and ready for collection on the same day as your PikitUp collection.

3. WHY DON’T WE NEED TO SEPARATE OUR RECYCLING?

The recyclables will be collected and sorted by SMMEs and cooperatives that will be responsible for the sorting and selling of recyclable materials. You just need to collect them and remember to put your bag out each week!

4. HOW DO WE GET A NEW BAG IF WE HAVEN’T RECEIVED ONE?

Call the City’s Call Centre 0860 562 874 or a Pikitup depot in your area.

5. WHEN WILL OUR RECYCLING BE COLLECTED?

On the same day as your PikitUp bins – simply place the recycling bag next to your bin.

6. ARE THEIR PENALTIES IF WE CHOOSE NOT TO DO IT?

Not yet, but this is something we ALL need to do. No excuses – do the next right thing!

7. HOW DO WE KNOW WHAT ITEMS QUALIFY AS “RECYCLING”?
